We take continuous steps towards sustainability: Modernising our fleet, cutting down our carbon dioxide emissions and exploring biofuels are just a few examples of our actions.

Thanks to our Nordic location, we’re able to take a short route between Europe and Asia and thus consume less fuel. Another key factor in reducing fuel consumption and lowering noise levels is flying a modern fleet. We also pay special attention to minimising the empty weight of our aircraft by using lightweight materials and new technology wherever we can.

Our actions in numbers

By 2020, we aim to cut our carbon dioxide emissions by 17% compared to 2013.

In 2017–2020, we strive to increase the number of our Continuous Decent Approach (CDA) -landings in Helsinki by 1% annually.



By deploying solar power and various other technological improvements, we aim to cut 4% of energy usage in our facilities by 2020 and 7,5% by the end of 2025 compared to 2015 level.

Retaining and fostering biodiversity is important to us. To this end, we contribute actively to projects to conserve our wildlife and natural environment.

Our values for cleaner travelling

Responsible and transparent environmental management is integral to Finnair’s business agenda and leadership model. By offering the shortest routes from Asia to Europe with our new aircraft fleet, our strategy supports environmentally responsible air travel. Finnair strives to be a leading airline in developing the aviation sector sustainably. ​

IATA

In 2014, Finnair became the first European airline to receive the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) Stage 2 certification for its environmental management systems. IEnvA is an environmental management system developed by IATA for airlines. IEnvA is compliant with the ISO 14001:2005 standard. This demonstrates that Finnair makes use of the best practices in the aviation industry.

Finnair's environmental management system is assessed by third-party auditors who are qualified to perform audits of environmental management systems and are authorised by IATA. To improve performance, Finnair has identified the key environmental aspects of its operations and their impacts and risks. Goals have been set to improve these aspects.​​

Modern Fleet

Our fleet is modern and fuel-efficient, which helps make air travel more sustainable. Over half of our long-haul fleet consists of modern Airbus A350s. The A350 has an extra-wide cabin with low noise levels, a state-of-the-art air filtration system that circulates fresh air during the flight, and ambient lighting inspired by the Northern Lights. It takes the flying experience to new heights.

The new Airbus A350 aircraft are approximately 25% more fuel-efficient in comparison to the previous models, while providing 20% more capacity for passengers and cargo.

Finnair’s operations are, by nature, very diverse and often highly technical. Our organisation and partners are present in dozens of countries around the globe and are subject to a wide range of laws and regulations. The core areas of our social responsibility include safety, care for our employees and customers and supply chain management.​​​

A major aspect of social responsibility has to do with personnel and their working conditions at Finnair, a major employer. Personnel management policies cover all aspects of social responsibility that have been identified as material. Effects on personnel and working conditions are managed as outlined in the HR guidelines and Finnair HR policy.

Finnair’s values – Commitment to Care, Simplicity and Courage – serve as a guideline for everyone at Finnair and are increasingly reflected in day-to-day operations.

According to our personnel survey ‘We Together@Finnair’, job satisfaction was 3.78/5.0. In 2017, the survey also included matters of equality and non-discrimination. The results were 3.98 and 3.35, respectively.

Leadership development continues to be one of Finnair’s key HR focus areas. We regularly examine the needs for team and organisational development, and monitor the welfare and commitment of our personnel.

Caring for customer

As an airline and service company at the top of this value chain, Finnair creates added value for its customers by providing them with a comprehensive and high-quality service in collaboration with its partners. We are responsible for transporting customers and their baggage to their destinations safely, smoothly and punctually.

The most significant product responsibility aspects in the Finnair Group’s operations are flight safety, food safety, responsibility for individual customers, and responsibility for the cargo carried.

Collaborative

As we’re constantly working together with numerous partners, industry stakeholders and environmental organisations, it’s important to keep an open dialogue. We require our suppliers to comply with similar ethical standards as we do, and we evaluate the sustainability of our supply chain from start to finish. We also like to offer our customers the opportunity to do good by, for example, donating their Finnair Plus points to charity.

Our partners

We are partners with several Finnish and international charity organisations. For example, we have actively supported a rainforest reforestation project in Madagascar for several years in cooperation with the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.

Ethical business conduct together with Finnair’s sustainability commitments - cleaner, caring and collaborative – are at the core of our overall responsibility strategy.

Code of Conduct

Finnair Code Of Conduct

Finnair’s ethical business principles are outlined in our Code of Conduct. The Code applies to all Finnair personnel, in all locations. Our Code of Conduct and its implementation policies give us the tools to do our work in a lawful and ethical manner.

Supplier Code of Conduct

We require that our suppliers comply with ethical standards essentially similar to those that concern our own operations. Our Supplier Code of Conduct provides clear principles to ensure ethical purchasing, including zero tolerance for corruption. We use the SEDEX supplier auditing tool in order to evaluate and improve the responsibility of our supply chain.

Commitments

In 2013, Finnair signed the United Nations Global Compact initiative and undertook to comply with the Global Compact’s ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

Finnair actively follows the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by working towards the aviation Development Goals.

In June 2018, Finnair signed the IATA Resolution against modern slavery and human trafficking.
