Supply chain sustainability
Building resilient supply chains through proactive risk management
We recognize that sustainable procurement is a critical enabler of our broader sustainability strategy and our commitment to responsible business practices.
Our diverse supply chain comprises suppliers regulated by the aviation industry, specialised service providers and those who support our core business. We maintain independence and avoid bias in sourcing decisions, particularly in cases involving family relationships, ownership in a company or external business or debt relationships.
Finnair has conducted an in-depth review and identified the key sustainability impacts, risks and opportunities (IRO) related to its value chain. You can read more about them in our Annual Report.
The Finnair Executive Board oversees our procurement activities, while the procurement unit is responsible for all significant sourcing projects and ensuring supplier selection according to a defined process and set criteria.
Supplier Code of Conduct
We are committed to selecting partners who adhere to our supplier requirements and ethical guidelines. Finnair’s Supplier Code of Conduct defines the minimum criteria for suppliers related to legal compliance, responsible business practices, labour and human rights and environment.
We expect all suppliers and partners to comply with the supplier code, local legislation, and the principles outlined in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Finnair's Policy commitment to human rights describes our approach to human rights and how we identify and assess the human rights impacts of our operations.
Sustainability risk management
We have established processes and guidelines to continuously improve the sustainability of our supply chain and address any non-compliance issues.
The process for supply chain sustainability risk management covers both new supplier evaluation and current supplier base assessment and risk mitigation. This helps ensure that our sourcing decisions are aligned with our sustainability and risk management goals from the very beginning of the supplier relationship.
We are continuously working to improve the transparency and sustainability of our supply chain. To support this goal, we have implemented an AI-powered supply chain risk management tool that monitors global news, social media, and other public data sources in real time. It enables proactive identification, assessment and mitigation of supplier risks, helping us to take a more data-driven and responsible approach to supply chain management.
New suppliers are screened for negative media coverage related to environmental, labour, human rights, governance, financial and legal issues. They are also expected to answer a sustainability questionnaire and we screen them for international trade sanctions and financial data. Finnair will not accept new suppliers with an elevated risk profile.
Supply chain sustainability risks are managed through a proactive risk mitigation process.
- Suppliers with potential risk are identified by country, industry and commodity risk rating. They undergo an AI-enabled ESG risk screening and receive a risk score.
- Suppliers with a medium-risk score undergo an automated maturity assessment.
- Suppliers with a high risk score are expected to answer a sustainability self-assessment. If necessary, further risk mitigation actions are taken.
Whistleblowing
Finnair uses a Whistleblowing line called SpeakUp , through which our employees, partners and value chain workers can report concerns or violations related to ethical business conduct. We encourage you to report any observations of suspected fraud or misconduct, unethical behavior or violation of laws and regulations.
